It's right off of the 260 highway- rather busy outside on the roads. There's a fee to pay if you want to stay overnight and they do have a self-serve machine inside (search for Shower House on Google Maps and it's located there). Looks like the camping is first come, first serve.
There weren't really any clear signs of where to go, and some of the roads seemed to be one way- wish there was clearer signage.
Overall, happy with the concrete paved roads, and the area is clean. There's also restrooms with running water and flushing toilets.
Nothing too scenic or special to see here other than the towering pine trees. If you crave scenic views, I would recommend heading up to the campgrounds closer to Woods Canyon Lake.
Everything about this campground was just awesome! Valerie and her husband were exceptional hosts they've been truly great. The campground is clean bathrooms are clean the scenery is perfect I love this campground. I would recommend this to everybody and anybody who comes up to Payson and wants to camp. visit Houston Mesa campground you will not be disappointed.
We stayed partially during the week and then through the weekend. It was very quiet during the week but as soon as the weekend hit it was packed with large families. There was lines to use the restroom and kids kept walking through our campsite. We were close to the bathroom which we liked and felt very safe. Our campground itself also had good spacing and places for us to set up our tents. Overall a good experience, just very busy.
Lots and lots of road noise. Bathrooms filthy and don't look like they've been cleaned in over a week. Charge $29 to camp in "peak season according to they're Web site" Oct 24 but showers are closed down and rv dump station is closed, no discount in price🤔. Not impressed, this is probably the worst forest campground I've stayed in.
We really enjoyed our time at this campground. The sites are very nicely kept. Each site had trees and native plants surrounding them giving you and your site privacy. Nice clean restrooms as well. Our campsite host - Valerie, was very sweet and happily took care of us and our needs.
It was a nice stay, bathrooms were better than other campgrounds and have actual toilets and sink (bring your own soap). Unfortunately the sound of traffic at night and helicopters/airplanes flying overhead constantly early in the morning is pretty loud. Loud people singing in sync at night kept waking us and our children up but overall the campsite was well taken care of.
Showers are ALWAYS closed...but no discount in price.
While very convenient to Payson, very loud from traffic. Can get extremely crowded...I wouldn't recommend.
I drove in one day to just make a quick lunch...I wasn't there 2 minutes and a host pulled up asking if I was a guest...sheesh
Host should go work on bathrooms instead 😆🙄
My family and I really enjoyed our stay there. We reserved site 23 in the Elk Loop area and it was better than expected. Very large and the trees offered plenty of privacy. No hookups which helped it feel more like camping despite having all the luxuries (and headaches) of a travel trailer. Apart from the road noise that you'd expect with it being so close to town, the campgrounds were nice a quiet.
Flush toilets were nice to have access to, but be sure to check in advance if you expect there to be showers or a dump station. Both were closed when we stayed there. They had fresh water available near the restrooms.
If you're camping in a trailer and need water and/or a dump station after your visit, there's a gas station right across the highway with a free dump station and potable water (or I was told).
